🏛️ Smithtown Cemetery – Patriot Burial Marker

  • A William G. Pomeroy Foundation historical marker was installed in 2022 at the intersection of North Country Road (NY-25A) and Judges Lane in Smithtown. It commemorates Revolutionary War patriot Zephaniah Platt, who is buried in Smithtown Cemetery

  • The inscription reads:
    “PATRIOT BURIALS – SMITHTOWN CEMETERY – REVOLUTIONARY WAR PATRIOT ZEPHANIAH PLATT BURIED HERE. IMPRISONED FOR HIDING REBEL

  • The marker notes that Platt was imprisoned after hiding rebel whaleboats in his barn. He was taken to a prison ship in New York Harbor, contracted smallpox, and died shortly after on January 27, 1778, at age 74

  • A dedication ceremony took place on May 24, 2022, with participation from the Long Island Sons of the American Revolution and local historical groups

  • Smithtown Cemetery is located on North Country Road (Route 25A), near Judges Lane. It’s maintained by the Smithtown Cemetery Association, which oversees burials and upkeep

  • The cemetery holds over 2,200 memorials, but only Platt has been specifically recognized with a Patriot marker
